St. Louisans will celebrate the Eads Bridge at 150 years of use. Declared to be “Impractical and Impossible”, the Eads bridge still stands and is used daily. James Buchanan Eads, Chief Engineer, designed the bridge, but many others helped in its financing, opening, and maintenance. St. Louis Mayors at Bellefontaine Cemetery The mayor of St. Louis is the chief executive officer of St. Louis city government. Forty-seven people have held the office, four of whom—William Carr Lane, John Fletcher Darby, John Wimer, and John How—served non-consecutive terms.
