Caravan Tour Join us for a guided caravan tour! Drive along in your car and follow the caravan led by our Master Guide Cathleen. We will drive to four different locations inside historic Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. At each location, we will all exit our vehicles and Cathleen will give us a tour through history! First, we’ll visit a U.S. Senator involved in a duel on Bloody Island. Also, we’ll check out the Father of Digestion as well as a Medal of Honor recipient. Next stop, we’ll view the Busch Mausoleum and several riverboat pilots. William Clark’s memorial will be our next stop. It’s a large monument dedicated to his heroic efforts on the Voyage of Discovery. The last destination is Prospect Avenue. This is where the St. Louis movers and shakers of the early 1900s are buried. We will go into the Wainwright and Lemp Mausoleums. Bellefontaine Cemetery is a place to find inspiration and a place to honor life. ♦ Space is limited and reservations are required ♦ Please wear appropriate outdoor walking attire as we will explore different areas upon leaving our vehicles. ♦ Walking terrain is mild with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces ♦ We ask that everyone arrive 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure ♦ This is a rain or shine event except in the case of extreme lightning REGISTER NOW! Steamboaters and Bellefontaine Cemetery Whether we are talking pilots, captains, or owners, the waterways and the ships that traversed them helped define St. Louis and the region. At first, it was every man—or boat—for himself, but soon set timetables and routes were established. This led to competition among private owners and groups, leaving casualties in the wake of organization. Then there is the river: at once a superhighway and a vexed spirit. Accidents and mishaps on the Mississippi mean a short life for most ships and many who guide them. Watch from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be! Sign up now for this free online presentation! REGISTER NOW! MAKE A GIFT Tours are free, however, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. Consolations of Memory at Bellefontaine Cemetery, Saturday, October 12, 2024 The Saint Louis Mourning Society presents “Consolations of Memory” with the support of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This event isn’t like other fall cemetery tours. Rather than portraying the spirits of those buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery, we portray the living, breathing people of the era who were left behind to mourn the loss of a loved one. Consolation of Memory is a guided cemetery walk around Historic Hotchkiss Chapel. Each year focuses on a different topic related to life, death, and mourning in the mid-19th century. During the tour, guests will learn about tragic events in St. Louis' history, Funeral and burial practices, and how the dead were remembered by those left behind to mourn. The tour is followed immediately by a funeral reenactment, procession, and burial service. 2024's tour will focus on the history and development of 19th-century rural cemeteries directly after a reenactment of the 1864 funeral of Deborah W. Page, wife of the mayor of St. Louis – Daniel Page. Arrive at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum at our gate located at 4947 W. Florissant. Once inside the gates follow directional signage to the event parking. Registration will direct you to transportation to the Mourning Society event location. This is a free event. Tours take place at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. Space is limited, so be sure to register for one of these tours here today! Register Now! There are different tour times from which you can choose. Registration is required, so please sign up for your preferred tour time by clicking on one of the links below.
