The mayor of St. Louis is the chief executive officer of St. Louis’s city government. Forty-seven people have held the office, four of whom—William Carr Lane, John Fletcher Darby, John Wimer, and John How—served non-consecutive terms.
Twenty-one of these 47 mayors have been laid to rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Some of these mayors held other political offices of our state; others fulfilled duties for other territories. Many had essential roles outside of politics, which aided in developing the city, the region, and the state. All their stories interweave to give a background of St. Louis’s development.
