Obituary For Martha Chapin Mallett

Martha C. (Moore) Mallett, age 60, passed away at her home in High Ridge, Missouri on July 2, 2024. She had been in hospice care at home for 3 weeks following an 11-month battle with cancer. She was born Oct 20, 1963 to the late Edward and Elinor Moore in Summit, New Jersey. The family moved to Madison, Wisconsin when Martha was almost 3 years old. She graduated from West High School of Madison, WI in 1981. Martha (also known as Marty) received a BS degree in Wildlife Ecology from University of Wisconsin in Madison. After college she worked in various wildlife related jobs around the country for several years before moving to St Louis to take an internship at the World Bird Sanctuary, where she met her future husband Mike Mallett who was a volunteer there. Martha and Mike were married on 5 Nov 1994 in St Louis, Missouri. The ring-bearer at their wedding was a barn-owl. They lived in Dupo, IL for a year or so before purchasing their house in High Ridge, MO. Their son, Aaron Michael Mallett was born in 1997.

Marty worked in retail for many years primarily at Wild Birds Unlimited. Both Marty & Mike enjoyed birdwatching and had many birdfeeders in their yard. Mike is a falconer and kept a hawk there each winter for hunting. Mike and Marty enjoyed camping with their little camper, hiking and watercolor painting. They had hoped to do a big camping trip to National Parks out west this spring, but that did not happen because of Marty’s illness. Marty was a very outgoing person and had many friends both in St Louis and friends from Wisconsin that she kept up with over the years. Marty loved horses and owned a horse for about 10 years as a teen and young adult. She was a long-time active member of First Congregational Church of St Louis. Marty was very concerned about environmental issues and had requested a green burial.

Marty is survived by her husband Mike Mallett and son Aaron Mallett of High Ridge, MO. She is survived by two sisters Nancy Moore of Madison, WI and Shirley Bild (Vince Schillizzi) of St Charles, MO; an uncle Thomas (Virgina) Moore of Hampton, VA; nephew Andrew (Elizabeth) Ray, grand-nieces Abigail and Emily Ray of Bentonville AR; nephew Jonathan (Caitlyn) Driehorst of Las Vegas, NV; many cousins across the country; mother-in law Shirley Mallett of Dupo, IL; sisters-in law Karen (Craig) Hood, Mary (Dennis) Fuller and Patty (Donnie) Williams all of Dupo, IL.

The commitment and burial was held at Bellefontaine Cemetery, 4947 W. Florissant Ave, St Louis, MO 63115 on Tuesday July 9 at 9:30am. A memorial service will be held on September 14 at 10am at First Congregational Church, 6501 Wydown Blvd, Clayton, MO 63105 with live streaming available for those unable to attend in person.

I have known Marty, Mike and Aaron for many years through our church for many years. I will always remember her warm and loving greeting to everyone she knew, her thoughtfulness for people, animals and the "earth" and her wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed by all of us who had the blessing of knowing her. Michele Bryan

I met Marty when she worked at Savers Thrift Store. She was a pleasure to work with and we soon became friends. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers to her family. She loved purple so I'd like to light a purple candle in her memory.

I met Marty working at the Wild Bird Center (2014-2017). Marty had a wealth of knowledge about birds and helped me to learn and enjoy the work at the store. As importantly, Marty was a kind person of faith and I was proud to call her a friend. After the store closed we would occasionally swap text messages, sometimes on her favorite topic - birds and bird feeding, of course! There is no doubt she is in our Lord's loving embrace.
