1904 World's Fair and Bellefontaine Cemetery 119 years ago, St. Louis welcomed 20 million visitors to the Grandest of World’s Fairs from April 30 through December 1, 1904. David R. Francis, President of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was vital in securing this event for the City of St. Louis. All eyes turned to St. Louis as the new century was on display in the fair’s larger-than-life palaces, and new technology was front and center throughout the Fair Grounds. In our presentation, we will identify and explain some of the key figures in the creation and execution of the 1904 World’s Fair. Those who are featured in these presentations are forever at rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Make it a date night, a family night, or enjoy the presentation by yourself. Join Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum’s Green Burial expert, Gracie Griffin, as she provides a closer look at green burial practices, dispels myths, and discusses new trends and options in death-care. You will learn about the range of “green” funeral and cemetery options available today, like being “planted” in a meadow, what one can expect when choosing a green service, and the environmental benefits of green burial as compared to cremation and traditional burial. This 1.5 hour presentation, with a Q&A to follow, will be held in Hotchkiss Chapel at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Enter the main gates of the cemetery at 4947 W. A Spirited Holiday Past

Join the historic sites, museums, and homes of Historic Saint Louis as we present a splendid grand tour. Each venue will be decorated with a festive flair for this one-day event. Many sites will also have unique entertainment, whether a costumed skit, music, or seasonal activity. Bellefontaine Cemetery will host visitors at the Historic Hotchkiss Chapel. Visitors arrive at 4947 W. Florissant Ave. and follow white and green direction signs to the chapel. We hope to see you here! ABOUT THE HOLIDAY GAMES: Have you ever wondered how your ancestors enjoy the holidays in days gone past? Now is your chance to step back in time and take part in activities of the holidays that made merry. Our hosts from the Mourning Society of St. Louis will aid you on your journey to the past by supplying knowledge of games of the past? ABOUT THE GUIDED WALKING TOURS: Each of the guided walks will be one hour over less than a mile of light terrain. The history walking tours will focus on historical stories, architecture, and some iconography. The iconography walking tours will focus on the imagery/symbols on different monuments and their meanings. ABOUT THE SEATED PRESENTATION: Join us for a PowerPoint presentation on those persons associated with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, whose final place of rest is Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. David R. Francis, Issac Taylor, William Lemp, and Adolphus Busch all had a hand in making the 1904 World's Fair the Grandest Fair ever. Triumph and Tragedy will be explored in this 50-minute presentation, which will be presented in the Historic Hotchkiss Chapel built in 1909.
