Photographers at Bellefontaine Cemetery As photography went from an art form only done in a studio to a hobby performed by everyone, St. Louis photographers could be found at the cutting edge of this transition. Several photographers are memorialized here at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum and will be featured in this online presentation, from Thomas Easterly, to the Parrish Sisters, Fitz Guerin and many others who made their mark in this new media. Caravan Tour Join us for a guided caravan tour! Drive along in your car and follow the caravan led by our Master Guide Cathleen. We will drive to a few different locations inside historic Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. At each location, we will all exit our vehicles and Cathleen will give us a tour through history! The adventure begins with a drive to our serene Wildwood Valley Gardens. We will walk the Gardens and visit the impressive Cascade Mausoleum, our newest mausoleum. The next stop is Prospect Avenue. The "movers and shakers" of the 1900s are buried there. The last stop is the area surrounding explorer William Clark's plot. This caravan tour is a unique way to explore the grounds and learn about some of the people memorialized at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. ♦ Space is limited and reservations are required ♦ Please wear appropriate outdoor walking attire as we will explore different areas upon leaving our vehicles. ♦ Walking terrain is mild with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces ♦ We ask that everyone arrive 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure ♦ This is a rain or shine event except in the case of extreme lightning REGISTER NOW! This tour will focus on some of the most interesting plant selections that make up Bellefontaine’s collection of about 10,000 trees and shrubs, represented by nearly 600 distinct species, selections, and varieties. Saints and Sinners and Bellefontaine Cemetery The era in which we live may impact our idea of who is a Saint or a Sinner. Virginia Minor worked most of her life to make the world better for others. During the Civil War, she worked with the St. Louis Union Aid Society, a precursor to the American Red Cross. Later, she attempted to use the 14th Amendment to vote in the Presidential of 1872 and worked to secure women the right to vote. Despite Virginia’s lifetime of service, no clergy would officiate her 1894 funeral because her Suffragist belies and activities were considered disruptive of the “natural order” of the times. Learn how others in their time may have been classified compared to how we view their lives today during a free Zoom presentation featuring some of the Saints and Sinners eternally resting within the 314 acres of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum.
