Iconography and Bellefontaine Cemetery If you are interested in Iconography, then join us for a free 50-minute Zoom presentation featuring some of the different symbols you may see at Bellefontaine Cemetery and their meanings. Iconography is the study or interpretation of images or symbols used on headstones, crypts, and mausoleums in a cemetery. Cemeteries are virtual encyclopedias of symbolism. The symbols on a person’s grave may help tell us something about their life. Grave markers not only record the dearly departed’s name and dates of birth and death, but the design can often indicate a person’s history, religion, ethnicity, culture, occupation, or social status, as well as their pleasures, sorrows, and hopes for the afterlife. At Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum, we provide architectural and symbolism in-person tours throughout the year. We’ve had so much interest in the symbols on various grave markers and mausoleums that we thought we’d do a video presentation to share more information about “iconography”. Watch from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be! Sign up now for this free online presentations. REGISTER NOW! MAKE A GIFT These presentations are free. Horticulture Class – Winter Tree ID Join our Director of Horticulture, James Faupel, for an indoor presentation to introduce you to tree identification before heading out onto the Arboretum grounds to explore St. Louis’s most diverse tree collection. It may be cold, but winter is the absolute best time of year to learn how to identify trees when their leaves aren’t available to fool you. Don’t forget to bring your plant photography and note taking gear, and to dress for the weather! This class will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Space is limited, and reservations are required. The cost per person to attend is FREE, with a suggested donation of $15. Please wear appropriate walking attire and dress for cold winter weather. Room is limited and reservations are required. Please arrive at the main entrance between 15 to 20 minutes before class time for a prompt departure. Sign Up!
