This 2-hour walk through the cemetery led by one of our Master Guides will convey highlights of the cemetery grounds, horticulture, and various intriguing figures who eternally rest at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Cathleen’s Chapel Walking Tour Walking is the best way to experience a cemetery. It allows us to get up close to observe trees and plants as well as the symbols and images on monuments. This tour will begin inside the Hotchkiss Chapel, constructed in 1909. On our walk, we will visit the final resting place of Adolphus and Lily Busch, several Civil War generals, Steamboat captains, a contemporary artist, and the founder of kindergarten. As St. Louisans had grand homes throughout the city, they also had grand mausoleums on the grounds of Bellefontaine. This tour focuses on the history, iconography, and architecture of these elegant structures. The families have granted entrance into a few of these mausoleums. Explore these iconic structures with two guides who will share stories of the families and the mausoleums. 1904 World's Fair Open Day One hundred and seventeen years ago, on April 30, 1904, St. Louis was preparing to welcome 20 million visitors to the Grandest of World’s Fairs. Twenty million would enter the gates from April 1 until December 1, 1904. David R. Francis, President of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was vital in securing this event for the City of St. Louis. All eyes turned to St. Louis as the new century was on display in the fairs larger than life palaces, and new technology was front and center throughout the Fair Grounds. In our presentation, we will identify and explain some of the key figures in the creation and execution of the 1904 World’s Fair. Our 314 acres are open year-round for visitors to explore but, on this day, we will be including some additional activities to celebrate the value of trees in our lives and their importance to the environment. This year also marks Missouri's Bicentennial induction as the 24th state into the United States. Trees have played an essential part of our Missouri history and will continue to be part of its future. Tree Giveaway From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., our horticulture staff and volunteer gardeners will be available to 'talk trees' and answer tree-related questions about the arboretum and your property. We will be giving away 150 bare-root Missouri native saplings to the first visitors. First come, first serve. Arboretum Walking Tours Two arboretum walks will be available to discuss trees' importance to Missouri, past, present, and future. Reservations are required Limit of 15 per walk First walk is at 10:00 a.m The second tour is at 1:00 p.m. Each walk will be about 1.5 hours in length; expect to walk 1 mile along roads and slightly uneven terrain.
