Join Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum's Green Burial expert, Gracie Griffin, as she provides a closer look at green burial practices, dispels myths, and explores some exciting and fascinating options available throughout the world. You will learn the range of "green" funeral and cemetery options available today- like "becoming a tree," what one can expect when choosing a green service, and the environmental benefits of green burial as compared to cremation and traditional burial. This one hour presentation with a Q&A to follow will be held in the Willow Gatehouse just inside the main gates. Two dates and times to choose from. Celebrate Black History Month at Bellefontaine Cemetery. Master Guides will lead a 2 hour bus tour weaving the stories of intriguing figures in Black History with highlights of the cemetery grounds and monuments. Seating is limited and reservations are required. We ask that everyone arrive between 9:30 am and 9:45 am for a prompt 10:00 am departure. The Bus is climate controlled but weather appropriate clothing is suggested as opportunities to disembark from the vehicle are available. Theses tours are free, however donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted.

Join us at Hotchkiss Chapel for a one hour presentation focused on the history of African Americans interred at Bellefontiane. We'll discuss historic figures such as Rev. John Richard Anderson and John Berry Meachum as well as how Free People of Color and Slaves alike came to rest at Bellefontaine. Following the presentation, attendees are invited to caravan to a handful of grave sites highlighted durring the talk. Plan to arrive at 1:15 or earlier to allow for a prompt start at 1:30 pm. This is a rain or shine event. Please wear weather apropriate attire and footware for walking through the cemetery. |

The buildings, mausoleums, and monuments at Bellefontaine Cemetery reflect a variety of influences, from classical revival and Romanesque styles to Gothic and Egyptian revival—and even some forms of modern architecture. Learn about some of the most famous burial plots at Bellefontaine, including the Wainwright Tomb, the Tate Mausoleum, and the Hotchkiss Chapel. This class will be led by Dan Fuller. The class is presented in cooperation with the St. Louis Community College Continuing Education Department. This 2 hour stroll through the cemetery will be led by one of our Volunteer Master Guides who will convey highlights of the cemetery grounds, horticulture and a variety of intriguing historic figures who call Bellefontaine their last address. Particular attention will be paid to the Horticulture side of the cemetery while in different levels of bloom during these Spring tours. ♦ Limited number of registations for the tour are avaialbe so reservations are required. ♦ Two hour walking tours cover about 2 miles across moderate terrain. ♦ Please wear appropriate walking attire. ♦ We ask that everyone arrive between 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure. ♦ Tours are free, however donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. |
