General Sterling Price
1809–1867
General
General Sterling Price was a veteran of the Mexican War and governor of Missouri from 1852-1857. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he tried to keep Missouri in the Union. He later joined the Confederacy as a Major General, but was driven from Missouri by the Union forces. When it became apparent that the South would lose the war, he fled to Mexico. His many friends in St. Louis urged him to return. When he died in St. Louis, his friends erected the 30-foot obelisk of Maine granite in his memory.
