Photographers and Bellefontaine Cemetery (Online Presentation) As photography went from an art form only done in a studio to a hobby performed by everyone, St. Louis photographers could be found at the cutting edge of this transition. Several photographers are memorialized here at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum and will be featured in this online presentation, from Thomas Easterly, to the Parrish Sisters, Fitz Guerin and many others who made their mark in this new media. Photography has transitioned with the times. Initially a rare and always artistic media, photography will emerge as a means for all to record the passage of time. Explore those St. Louis photographers that capture people, places, and things so that we can "see" what they saw in their time. Watch from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be! This free online presentation runs from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required, so please sign up now for this free online presentation! REGISTER NOW! Author Gene Eric Salecker will discuss his book The Destruction of the Steamboat Sultana: The Worst Maritime Disaster in American History. The Sultana was a sidewheel Mississippi steamboat carrying almost two thousand recently-released Union prisoners-of-war back north at the end of the Civil War. At 2:00 a.m. on April 27, 1865, when the boat was seven miles above Memphis, her boilers exploded. Almost 1,200 people perished in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. Gene Eric Salecker covers this disaster in detail and dispels the many myths that have been connected to the Sultana for too long. Almost every author who has written about the Sultana has relied on the words of a few survivors or referred to the works of previous authors to get their story. Advancing the scholarship, the author has visited the National Archives in Washington, DC, to comb through the handwritten transcripts of the three investigative bodies that looked into the disaster or poured over the handwritten testimony from the court-martial trial of Capt. Frederic Speed, the only person tried for the overcrowding of the vessel. In 1996, after extensive research and using the most current sources available at that time, Gene wrote Disaster on the Mississippi: The Sultana Explosion, April 27, 1865. Still, there were inevitable omissions. After almost twenty-five years of continued research on the Sultana, and all those involved in the disaster, Gene has gleaned unparalleled knowledge into every aspect of the disaster. His research, covering the National Archives, and thousands of pages of newspapers from around the world and government documents, including pension records and service records, has allowed Gene to tell the story of the Sultana as completely as possible. By bringing his research back to primary sources, Gene dispels myths and adds to the story of the Sultana. In Destruction of the Steamboat Sultana: The Worst Maritime Disaster in American History, paroled prisoners, civilian passengers, guards, crew members, rescuers, and eyewitnesses tell their stories in their own words. The true and complete story about the Sultana and the disaster has finally, and fully, been told. This event will be held at Historic Hotchkiss Chapel on the grounds of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Enter the main gates of the Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant Ave. then follow the street signs to the Hotchkiss Chapel. Registration is required. Please sign up now! Sign Up! New: Sunday Trolley Tours at Bellefontaine! Join us for our newest Trolley Tour! This two-hour Trolley Tour is inspired by the 1944 Tour created by Historian John A. Bryan. During the war years (1943), the National Park Service created a series of talks on Sunday afternoon and presented in the Old Court House. This program was to give alternatives to automobile use due to the war needs. The subjects of these talks included historic homes, churches, business buildings, the site of the 1904 World's Fair, and finally a part of Bellefontaine Cemetery. Since the talk and suggested walking tour of Bellefontaine proved to be one of the most popular of the series, the Bellefontaine Cemetery Association created a booklet that could then be followed as a self tour of part of the Cemetery grounds. This Trolley tour will follow in those same steps in the comfort of a climate controlled trolley, led by the Cemetery Chronicler. Enter the grounds of Bellefontaine Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant, and staff/volunteers will guide you to parking and Willow Gate House to begin the tour. This trolley tour is from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. ♦ Seating is limited and tickets are required.♦ We ask that everyone arrive 15 minutes early for a prompt departure.♦ The Trolley is climate controlled but weather-appropriate clothing is suggested as opportunities to disembark from the vehicle are available.♦ Trolley tour tickets are free with a suggested donation of $5 each. Join Lacey Reinhardt, BCA Event and Volunteer Coordinator, as she provides a closer look at green burial practices, dispels myths, and discusses new trends and options in death-care. Saints and Sinners and Bellefontaine Cemetery (Online Presentation) The era in which we live may impact our idea of who is a Saint or a Sinner. Virginia Minor worked most of her life to make the world better for others. During the Civil War, she worked with the St. Louis Union Aid Society, a precursor to the American Red Cross. Later, she attempted to use the 14th Amendment to vote in the Presidential of 1872 and worked to secure women the right to vote. Despite Virginia’s lifetime of service, no clergy would officiate her 1894 funeral because her Suffragist belies and activities were considered disruptive of the “natural order” of the times. Learn how others in their time may have been classified compared to how we view their lives today during a free Zoom presentation featuring some of the Saints and Sinners eternally resting within the 314 acres of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Watch from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be! This free online presentation runs from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required, so please sign up now for this free online presentation! REGISTER NOW! Fresh Finds with BCA's Cemetery Chronicler – Walking Tour Every week, a new piece of history is discovered—or rediscovered—at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This unique tour begins at the Willow Gate House, where we will review and discuss the specific document or record that sparked our latest finding. Following this brief historical overview, attendees will drive their own vehicles to the discovery site (using our "EPW" method: escort, park, and walk). Once gathered, we will begin a 90-minute walking tour. The remainder of the experience explores the people, symbolism, and architectural highlights encountered along the route, offering additional insights into the Cemetery's design. Participants will walk approximately 1.5 miles of moderate terrain across the grounds of the oldest Garden/Rural Cemetery west of the Mississippi. Tour Details: Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles Terrain: Moderate Attire: Please wear appropriate walking shoes and clothing. Arrival: Please arrive 15–20 minutes early for a prompt departure. Registration is limited and reservations are required. Sign up now! REGISTER NOW!
