Kearny was a veteran of the War of 1812 and later commanded Fort Leavenworth where he protected the wagon trains en route to Oregon and Santa Fe. He is most prominently identified with the war in Mexico during the years 1846-48. A few months after the close of that war he died leaving nine children. Many of his descendants still reside in this section of the country.
