Frederick Dozier Gardner
1869–1933
Governor of Missouri

At the age of seventeen, Frederick Gardner came to St. Louis from his native Kentucky to work as a casket maker, later becoming president of the company. He was governor of Missouri from 1917 to 1921, and left office with a large surplus in the treasury. His wife, the former Jeanette Vosburgh, had the difficult task of entertaining many foreign dignitaries who visited this area shortly after the close of World War I.
