SUMMARY:Cathleen's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Cathleen’s Walk\nThe adventure begins with a drive to the William Clark Plot.  Walking to the ideal way to observe the cemetery.  It is easy to view monuments and take in the scenic view.  After checking out William Clark’s family plot\, we will visit the graves of three Civil War participants and an African American doctor who changed health care in St. Louis.  Down the road\, there are two suffragists.  Across the street is the Hempstead family plot which is the oldest in the cemetery.  Hidden under some trees\, we’ll discover a statue of a seven year old bot looking dapper in his knickers and well as an iron cross revealing the last name of Chouteau.  By telling their stories and visiting their graves\, I hope to keep their memories alive. \n♦   Space is limited and reservations are required♦   Walking terrain is mild with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces♦   Please wear appropriate outdoor walking attire♦   We ask that everyone arrive 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure♦   This is a rain-or-shine event except in the case of extreme lightning \n  \nREGISTER NOW! \n  \nMAKE A GIFT\nTours are free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. \nTo make a gift to the Friends of Bellefontaine\, email Joe Shields or call our office at 314-381-0750. \nMake a gift onlineVENMO: @FriendsofBellefontaineCemeteryPAYPAL: gayle@bcastl.org

SUMMARY:Saints and Sinners - Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Saints and Sinners and Bellefontaine Cemetery\n\nThe era in which we live may impact our idea of who is a Saint or a Sinner. Virginia Minor worked most of her life to make the world better for others. During the Civil War\, she worked with the St. Louis Union Aid Society\, a precursor to the American Red Cross. Later\, she attempted to use the 14th Amendment to vote in the Presidential of 1872 and worked to secure women the right to vote. Despite Virginia’s lifetime of service\, no clergy would officiate her 1894 funeral because her Suffragist belies and activities were considered disruptive of the “natural order” of the times.\n \nLearn how others in their time may have been classified compared to how we view their lives today during a free Zoom presentation featuring some of the Saints and Sinners eternally resting within the 314 acres of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. The presentation is on Wednesday\, November 1\, at 7:00 p.m. Reservations are required\, so please sign up today!\n\n\nREGISTER NOW!\n  \n\nMAKE A GIFT\nTours are free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. SUMMARY:Literature Event—The Gateway Arch: An Illustrated Timeline
DESCRIPTION:AUTHOR TALK: JOHN C. GUENTHER\, “THE GATEWAY ARCH: AN ILLUSTRATED TIMELINE”\nAbout the Program \nBellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum welcomes author\, architect\, and historian John C. Guenther on Saturday\, November 18\, 2023\, to discuss his new book\, “The Gateway Arch: An Illustrated Timeline“. \nThe book takes a chronological look at the historical foundations of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial\, beginning in 1699 with the Louisiana Territory\, with 90 historical events which led to the realization of the Gateway Arch and the latest refinements to the memorial grounds and new museum. \nAs John writes in the book’s Introduction: “As impressive as the Gateway Arch is\, the story of how this monument came to be is equally remarkable. This book seeks to ‘connect the dots’ of history\, illustrating key points in time which led to the creation of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the Gateway Arch. Within this context\, the reader may better understand and appreciate the importance of this site\, the historical events that shaped our nation\, region\, Missouri\, and St. Louis across time\, and how the Memorial and Gateway Arch grew out of these events\, honoring\, celebrating\, and raising our awareness of them.” \nAbout the Speaker \nArchitect John C. Guenther\, FAIA\, LEED AP holds a fellowship in the American Institute of Architects and was a lecturer in the College of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he co-founded and taught Mid-Century Modernism in St. Louis 1930–1970. John serves as president of the Society of Architectural Historians–St. Louis Chapter. He wrote “Missouri’s Architectural Treasures\,” published by Missouri Life Magazine; “25 Must-See Buildings in Missouri” for USA TODAY; and the introduction to The Lost St. Louis Riverfront 1930-1943\, which documents the historic riverfront architecture removed in anticipation of Gateway Arch National Park. \n\nEvent Location \nThis event will be held at the Historic Hotchkiss Chapel inside Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. \nOnce you arrive at Bellefontaine Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant\, follow the directional signage to Hotchkiss Chapel. \n\n\nREGISTER NOW!\n\nMAKE A GIFT\nThis event is free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted.
