SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Voices at Bellefontaine
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed production of “Voices” from the Hawthorne Players returns to Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum on Saturday\, September 30\, and Sunday\, October 1! Join us for extraordinary performances that bring to life the amazing stories of our permanent residents. This year’s performances include one of the country’s first celebrity chefs whose 19th-century restaurant in St. Louis was named the finest in the country; two pre-Civil War power couples; a leading St. Louis photographer and war hero; a world-renowned doctor who pioneered science through odd and dubious ethical means; and the acclaimed actor and comedian who founded the first permanent theatre in St. Louis in the early 1800s. \nThe grounds of our Level III Arboretum provide an exclusive backdrop for the actors to portray their characters. You will travel through the cemetery and disembark at stops for seated performances. \nThere are three performances each day\, and you’ll have an opportunity to participate in a backstage experience with the cast on Sunday\, October 1\, immediately following the 3:30 p.m. performance. SUMMARY:Cathleen's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Cathleen’s Walk\nThe adventure begins with a drive to the William Clark Plot.  Walking to the ideal way to observe the cemetery.  It is easy to view monuments and take in the scenic view.  After checking out William Clark’s family plot\, we will visit the graves of three Civil War participants and an African American doctor who changed health care in St. Louis.  Down the road\, there are two suffragists.  Across the street is the Hempstead family plot which is the oldest in the cemetery.  Hidden under some trees\, we’ll discover a statue of a seven year old bot looking dapper in his knickers and well as an iron cross revealing the last name of Chouteau.  By telling their stories and visiting their graves\, I hope to keep their memories alive. \n♦   Space is limited and reservations are required♦   Walking terrain is mild with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces♦   Please wear appropriate outdoor walking attire♦   We ask that everyone arrive 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure♦   This is a rain-or-shine event except in the case of extreme lightning \n  \nREGISTER NOW! \n  \nMAKE A GIFT\nTours are free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. \nTo make a gift to the Friends of Bellefontaine\, email Joe Shields or call our office at 314-381-0750. \nMake a gift onlineVENMO: @FriendsofBellefontaineCemeteryPAYPAL: gayle@bcastl.org

SUMMARY:Steamboaters - Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Steamboaters and Bellefontaine Cemetery\n\n\nWhether we are talking pilots\, captains\, or owners\, the waterways and the ships that traversed them helped define St. Louis and the region. At first\, it was every man—or boat—for himself\, but soon set timetables and routes were established. This led to competition among private owners and groups\, leaving casualties in the wake of organization. Then there is the river: at once a superhighway and a vexed spirt. Accidents and mishaps on the Mississippi mean a short life for most ships and many who guide them. \nWatch from the comfort of your home or wherever you may be! Sign up now for this free video presentation on Wednesday\, October 4th at 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW!\n  \n\nMAKE A GIFT\nTours are free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. SUMMARY:Consolations of Memory
DESCRIPTION:Consolations of Memory at Bellefontaine Cemetery\, Saturday\, October 21\, 2023\nThe Saint Louis Mourning Society presents “Consolations of Memory” with the support of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This event isn’t like other fall cemetery tours. Rather than portraying the spirits of those buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery\, we portray the living\, breathing people of the era who were left behind to mourn the loss of a loved one. \nConsolations of Memory is a guided cemetery walk of the area surrounding Historic Hotchkiss Chapel. Each year focuses on a different topic related to life\, death\, and mourning in the mid-19th century. During the tour\, guests will learn about tragic events in St. Louis’ history\, funeral and burial practices\, and how the dead were remembered in the lives of those left behind to mourn. The tour is followed immediately by a funeral reenactment\, procession\, and burial service. \nArrive at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum at our gate located at 4947 W. Florissant.  Once inside the gates follow directional signage to the event parking.  Registration will direct you to transportation to the Mourning Society event location. \nThis is a free event. Tours take place at 9:30 a.m.\, 11:30 a.m.\, and 1:30 p.m. Space is limited\, so be sure to register for one of these tours here today! \nRegister Now!\nThere are six different tour times from which you can choose.
