DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed production of “Voices” from the Hawthorne Players returns to Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum on Saturday\, September 30\, and Sunday\, October 1! Join us for extraordinary performances that bring to life the amazing stories of our permanent residents. This year’s performances include one of the country’s first celebrity chefs whose 19th-century restaurant in St. Louis was named the finest in the country; two pre-Civil War power couples; a leading St. Louis photographer and war hero; a world-renowned doctor who pioneered science through odd and dubious ethical means; and the acclaimed actor and comedian who founded the first permanent theatre in St. Louis in the early 1800s. \nThe grounds of our Level III Arboretum provide an exclusive backdrop for the actors to portray their characters. You will travel through the cemetery and disembark at stops for seated performances. \nThere are three performances each day\, and you’ll have an opportunity to participate in a backstage experience with the cast on Sunday\, October 1\, immediately following the 3:30 p.m. performance. The Hawthorne Players will take part in a cast talkback session that includes light refreshments. Seating is limited for the cast talkback session. DESCRIPTION:Consolations of Memory at Bellefontaine Cemetery\, Saturday\, October 21\, 2023\nThe Saint Louis Mourning Society presents “Consolations of Memory” with the support of Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This event isn’t like other fall cemetery tours. Rather than portraying the spirits of those buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery\, we portray the living\, breathing people of the era who were left behind to mourn the loss of a loved one. \nConsolations of Memory is a guided cemetery walk of the area surrounding Historic Hotchkiss Chapel. Each year focuses on a different topic related to life\, death\, and mourning in the mid-19th century. During the tour\, guests will learn about tragic events in St. Louis’ history\, funeral and burial practices\, and how the dead were remembered in the lives of those left behind to mourn. The tour is followed immediately by a funeral reenactment\, procession\, and burial service. \nArrive at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum at our gate located at 4947 W. Florissant.  Once inside the gates follow directional signage to the event parking.  Registration will direct you to transportation to the Mourning Society event location. \nThis is a free event.
