SUMMARY:SOLD OUT! Cathleen's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Cathleen’s Walk\nThe adventure begins with a drive to the William Clark Plot.  Walking to the ideal way to observe the cemetery.  It is easy to view monuments and take in the scenic view.  After checking out William Clark’s family plot\, we will visit the graves of three Civil War participants and an African American doctor who changed health care in St. Louis.  Down the road\, there are two suffragists.  Across the street is the Hempstead family plot\, which is the oldest in the cemetery.  Hidden under some trees\, we’ll discover a statue of a seven-year-old boy looking dapper in his knickers as well as an iron cross revealing the last name of Chouteau.  By telling their stories and visiting their graves\, we hope to keep their memories alive. \n♦   Space is limited and reservations are required♦   Walking terrain is mild with a mixture of hard and soft surfaces♦   Please wear appropriate outdoor walking attire♦   We ask that everyone arrive 15 to 20 minutes before tour time for a prompt departure♦   This is a rain-or-shine event except in the case of extreme lightning \n  \nREGISTER NOW! \nMAKE A GIFT\nTours are free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted. \nTo make a gift to the Friends of Bellefontaine\, email Joe Shields or call our office at 314-381-0750. \nMake a gift onlineVENMO: @FriendsofBellefontaineCemeteryPAYPAL: donations@bcastl.org

This first of a three-part exploration goes into detail concerning St. Louis’s rich Fire Fighter heritage. Stating with early Volunteer forces and carrying up to the modern era\, we will look at the area’s rich history. SUMMARY:Literature Event: Walking South City
DESCRIPTION:Merkel: Walking South City\nHidden among the streets of St. Louis’s south side are stories that span centuries. In the wake of COVID-19\, author\, and journalist Jim Merkel set out on a walk that would take him block-by-block through the tales of history and community in South City. Completing the walk incrementally\, Merkel ponders the ways in which the area changed over time. Along the way\, he interviews some of the unique characters and leaders who help maintain the city\, encounters quirky stores and restaurants\, and enjoys beautiful scenery in parks and on restored streets. Most of all\, he finds hope in the underdogs\, in the neighborhoods that have come back to life after decades of decline\, and in the people whose love for their homes and their neighborhoods remains steadfast despite everything. \nSouth City is many things\, but most importantly\, it is a place where neighbors gather often\, where people come together in hardship\, and where small businesses and authenticity thrive. In Walking South City\, Merkel crafts a thorough depiction of the area\, with respect for the past and hope for the future. Grab your walking shoes\, follow along\, and get ready to look at South City in a way you never have before. \n\nThis event will be held at the Historic Hotchkiss Chapel inside Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. \nOnce you arrive at Bellefontaine Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant\, follow the directional signage to Hotchkiss Chapel. \n\n\nREGISTER NOW!\n  \n\nMAKE A GIFT\nThis event is free\, however\, donations to the Friends of Bellefontaine Cemetery are gratefully accepted.
