SUMMARY:Consolations of Memory: Death and Mourning in the Nineteenth Century
DESCRIPTION:The Mourning Society of St. Louis presents it’s annual event\, Consolations of Memory\, at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. This guided walk of the Hotchkiss Chapel area includes re-enactments of the mourning practices and funerary customs of the mid-19th century. \nTHE FUNERAL OF GENERAL PRICE\nThis year we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the burial of Sterling Price\, Missouri’s 11th Governor and a general in the Civil War. Members of the Mourning Society of St Louis will depict the funeral procession and burial service of  Price and his daughter in-law Celeste\, who was buried the same day. \nSeveral additional vignettes featuring prominent people from the Civil War era will also be portrayed. \nThe service of Sterling and Celeste will take place at 11:00\, 1:00 and 3:00.  Once the service is concluded attendees will procced to the rest of the tour. \nEVENT LOGISTICS\nThis is a free event but registration is required. \nTo help managing parking\, we ask that you select an arrival time when you register. \n \nOnce you are parked\, please proceed to the registration tent for assignment of your guide who will lead you through the stations of the event.  Complimentary parking and public restrooms will be available. Enter at the main gate of the cemetery and you will be directed to the parking area. \nThe walking tour is over moderate terrain and some steps.  Please contact dfuller@bellefontainecemetery.org by Oct 1 to make arrangements for anyone needing an accessible tour option. \nThis is a rain or shine event (except for excessive lightning.) \nABOUT THE MOURNING SOCIETY OF ST. LOUIS\n\nWe are a civilian re-enacting group with a focus on mid-nineteenth century mourning\, death culture\, funeral customs and Victorian spiritualism but we often branch out into other eras and topics from St Louis history such as the ladies of the 1916 Golden Lane Protest\, the 1904 World’s Fair and World War I. The Mourning Society has participated in events at Bellefontaine Cemetery and The Missouri History Museum. \n \nSave \nSave \nSave \nSave \nSave
