Captain Shreve built the first practical boat for use on the Mississippi, riding on the water instead of plowing through it. Later, under contract from the War Department, he removed driftwood that had obstructed navigation on the Red River. Shreveport, Louisiana reminds us that his name is not forgotten in the Red River Valley.
